UTM tags are the vocabulary your analytics speaks; a convention is agreeing to spell the words one way. Without one, “Facebook”, “facebook”, and “fb” fragment one channel into three, and reports quietly stop meaning anything.

The mental model

  • utm_source answers WHERE the click came from: google, facebook, newsletter, a partner’s name.
  • utm_medium answers WHAT KIND of channel: cpc, email, social, print.
  • utm_campaign answers WHICH push: spring-sale-202603. Add the date; a year later you’ll thank yourself.
  • term and content are optional refinements — paid keyword, and which creative variant.

The three rules that do all the work

Lowercase everything, hyphens for spaces, and tag every link you distribute — including the QR code on the truck and the link in your email signature. Consistency is the entire feature; the values themselves matter less than never varying them.

We keep ours as a one-page sheet anyone making links can follow — it’s free, take it — and the link builder enforces the formatting automatically.

This is the work. Want it done?

Everything here is free to use yourself — that’s the point. If you’d rather a senior marketer just handle it, in your accounts and your name: 20-minute call, no pitch deck.
