You can see almost every ad a competitor runs, legally and free. Two public libraries cover most of it, and checking them takes ten minutes.
Google Ads Transparency Center
At adstransparency.google.com, search any domain and see the advertiser’s active ads, formats, and rough volume, by region. If a rival shows hundreds of active ads, they’ve been spending long enough to believe it works — that’s evidence the auction produces customers in your category. Zero ads is equally informative: an open field, or a tested-and-abandoned one.
Meta Ad Library
Facebook’s library (facebook.com/ads/library) shows every active ad by advertiser name or keyword, with start dates. Fresh start dates across many creatives mean active iteration; ads running unchanged for a year usually mean either a proven winner or a forgotten campaign — the landing page tells you which.
How to read what you find
- Record counts and dates, not impressions. “~200 active ads on [date]” is a fact you can compare next quarter.
- Read the creatives for claims, not aesthetics — they feed the same lane analysis as homepage copy.
- A caveat for honesty: libraries show what runs, not what works. Volume and longevity are proxies for conviction, not proof of profit.
